Dear SouthCom Bound Personnel:
You are about to embark on a most unusual and rewarding tour of duty. Your assignment will be in a brand new, state-of-the-art building in one of the most exciting regions in the U.S. -- the Greater Miami area. The challenge of this relocation is unlike any you have ever encountered, because you will not have the "usual" installation infrastructure support. This may cause some momentory concern but it should pass quickly because Miami-Dade and Broward counties have everything you may need or want, and SouthCom has done everything to make your move easier. Even though this file consists of about 100 pages of information, you really only need one phone number to make your move easy. SouthCom has established the Miami Reception Center (see address, phone and e-mail below-just minutes from the Miami International Airport. Here you will find an understanding staff to assist with all of your questions from in-processing to child care to housing.
Before you arrive in South Florida, you can check out your new area, as this SITE guide was created to give you a comprehensive picture of Broward and Miami-Dade counties. SouthCom HQ is located in Miami-Dade County just west of the airport, however, the metropolitan area really consists of the majority of both counties. You may decide to live in either. In addition to useful telephone numbers and specifics about the area, we have included useful relocation tips since you will be acclimating to a new tour in a new city and you will be "living on the economy" as we say in the military.
A final word about the phone numbers and detailed records behind subject areas within the categories of SITES. Greater Miami is huge and the decision was made to include only free referral agency numbers, i.e., for child care services or housing (rental and purchase) assistance. In some cases when a detailed record is included it is because we have personally checked out the services of the company, especially in the real estate community under Housing.
The United States Southern Command (SouthCom) relocated its headquarters building to Miami-Dade County, Florida in 1997. The new headquarters is located 4 miles west of the Miami Airport at 3511 NW 91st Street in the WestPoint Business Park, and was completed in August of 1997. Approximately 850 personnel occupy the 154,848 sq. ft. building.
In anticipation of the service members, civilians, and their families making the move to Miami, SouthCom established a Miami Reception Center (MRC) near the Miami Airport. The Miami Reception Center holds the offices of Housing, Tricare, Civilian Personnel, Family Support Services, and MWR. Personnel arriving at the Miami Airport can reach the center within 10 minutes.
MISSION:
The United States Southern Command provides operational command and control for all U.S. land, sea, and air activities in the Southern Hemisphere, and, effective July 1997, the Caribbean. This change increases Southcom's area of operation from 6 million to 9.5 million square miles.
The move of SouthCom headquarters to Miami will greatly enhance mission effectiveness, including the opportunity to establish a state-of-the-art Command, Control, Computer, and Intelligence (C4I) network, integrating the new Global Command and Control System.
HISTORY:
Since 1904, the Southern Command and its predecessor, the Caribbean Command, have been located at Quarry Heights, Panama. The U.S. military presence in Panama has had a colorful history as a Joint Operation from World War II through Operation Just Cause in 1989, when President Manuel Noriega was captured. Pursuant to the terms of the Panama Canal Treaty, all U.S. Forces are required to depart the Republic of Panama by 31 December 1999. The President of the United States announced in March 1995 that the Headquarters, US Southern Command would lead the departure and relocate to the South Florida area.
