Moody AFB, GA Installation Guide

LOCATION:

Moody AFB is located in South Georgia, just 30 miles north of the Florida border.  The base lies 10 miles northeast of the city of Valdosta on Georgia highway 125, also known as Bemiss Road.  Valdosta is considered a low cost-of-living area.  The community widely supports and respects the men and women from the 23 WG.

HISTORY:

The base had its beginning in 1940, when a group of concerned Valdosta and Lowndes County citizens began searching for a way to assist the expanding defense program.  Careful investigation showed that the development of an air corp training base would be the best way to help the program.  On May 14, 1941, the War Department was granted exclusive use of 9,300 acres of land by the Agriculture Department.  Moody Air Force Base was named in memory of Major George Putnam Moody, an Air Force pioneer killed in May 1941, while serving with the Beech Aircraft Company in Wichita, Kansas. At the time of his death, Major Moody was working on the inspection board for the AT-10 transitional trainers that were later sent to Moody AFB.

MISSION:

Major Command:  Air Combat Command (ACC).  USAF's premier wing providing combat ready pararescue, HH-60G, HC-130P, A/OA-10 and "first-in" ground forces conducting combat search and rescue, close-air support, forward air control, interdiction and force protection totaling over 6,200 military and civilian personnel including four GSUs.  Hosts AETC's 479 FTG.  Executes worldwide operations in support of humanitarian interests, US national security and the GWOT.

The base has approximately 4,278 military and 375 civilian employees.  Population impact on the local community:

This number is even more significant when compared to the Valdosta population of 48,000 and Lowndes County with 85,000.

SPONSORSHIP

Upon arrival at Moody AFB you will need to proceed to the MPF during duty hours to sign in.  The MPF will collect your records and schedule you to attend the next available in-processing briefing.  If you arrive after 1630, contact your unit sponsor and proceed to the Billeting Office, Bldg 3131, phone 229-257-3893 (DSN 460) (24-hour arrival point) to sign in. If you have not been appointed a sponsor, call the command post at 229-257-3501 and have them contact your first sergeant or an Airman & Family Readiness Center representative.   Active duty and DOD civilians may receive a temporary mailing address.  The address is: Your name, General Delivery, Box 3000, Moody AFB, GA 31699. The post office is located at 5293 Schrader St, across from the Moody Club.

TEMPORARY QUARTERS

Billeting is limited.  Reservations in advance are highly encouraged.  Pets are not allowed in billeting; however, house pets may be accepted at Grassy Pond Recreation Park.

RELOCATION ASSISTANCE

Inprocessing and newcomer orientation (Right Start) is held every other Tuesday at 0730 at the Moody Field club. This is a mandatory appointment and spouses are encouraged to attend.  The Loan Closet offers inbound personnel temporary loan of household items before arrival of their household goods.  Items include, but are not limited to:  kitchen appliances/cookware, futons, cribs and high chairs, and folding tables and chairs.  The Loan Closet is located within the Airman & Family Readiness Center and operates Mon-Fri, from 0730-1700.  Contact the Moody Airman & Family Readiness Center at 229-257-3333 (DSN 460) for relocation assistance.

CRITICAL INSTALLATION INFORMATION

If you are a single parent or military married to military it is very important that you maintain a thorough and updated family care plan while assigned to Moody AFB.
