History:

The 11th Wing can trace its lineage to the 1st Aero Company, New York National Guard, headed by Colonel Raynal C. Bolling for whom the base was named in 1918. Bolling was the first high-ranking Air Service Officer killed in World War I on March 26, 1918. Bolling's 1st Aero Company, organized in November 1915, was busted into Federal service in July 1916 to support General John J. Pershing's strike against the revolutionary forces of Pancho Villa in northern Mexico. The base, which began on "Anacostia Flats", moved to its present location in the 1930's. Army Air Force Headquarters moved to Bolling in March of 1941 giving the Air Force equal standing with the Navy air arm in the National Capital Region. The Army Air Forces reorganized in 1946, forerunner to the Strategic Air Command (SAC) and was located at Bolling. Bolling Field became a separate command in December of that year, reporting directly to Air Staff. With the creation of the Air Force in 1947, the base became Bolling AFB. Bolling's flying mission declined in the '50s, before that such greats as Charles Lindbergh, Hap Arnold, "Tooey" Spatz, and Wiley Post began or ended historic flights here. Fixed wing operations were disestablished with its National Capital Region support mission transferring to the Military Airlift Command. The Air Force District of Washington (AFDW) was created and activated at Bolling on Oct. 1, 1985, with the mission of providing administrative support to Air Force members in the National Capital Region and 40,000 Air Force personnel in more than 80 countries. On July 15, 1994, AFDW was deactivated and the 11th Wing returned to the home of it's roots.
