In total, the District comprises 126 commands and activities. The Commandant exercises area coordination over 67,000 military and civilian employees assigned to Navy activities in the geographic area encompassed by Naval District Washington. The command's organizations include six major departments, and 20 staff and special assistants. Naval District Washington is also known as the Quarterdeck of the Navy.

The Washington Navy Yard is 40 miles south of Baltimore City, Maryland, 50 miles from Annapolis, Maryland and 80 miles from Richmond, Virginia.

The Naval Support Activity Washington is currently under the leadership of CAPT S.C. Maybaumwisniewski. As Commanding Officer CAPT Maybaumwisniewski oversees the operations at both the Anacostia Complex and the Washington Navy Yard. The Navy Yard-Anacostia complex is growing with new tenants, and the NDW Anacostia Annex CO provides support to those commands. In view of base re-alignment (BRAC), at the turn of the Century, the western side of the Navy Yard will be the location for the Naval Sea Systems Command and 5000 employees.

Headquarters is located at the Washington Navy Yard, and the mailing address is: Naval District Washington, Washington Navy Yard, 1014 N Street, SE, Suite 200, Washington DC 20374-5001.

The Anacostia Annex is our personnel support base. The PSD, Family Service Center (FSC), MWR, and Housing Welcome Center, are all located there. You will check in at our duty office at Building 72.

Washington DC is not considered a critical housing area. Government off-base housing units are available at the following locations: Woodbridge Run in Woodbridge, Virginia; Summerfield in Landover, Maryland; and Bellevue in South East, DC. Limited numbers of on-base housing are available at Bolling AFB, Andrews AFB, and Fort Belvoir Army Base in Virginia. The normal waiting list is about 2-12 months. You can reach the housing office at 1-800-210-0139.

There is a Navy Lodge at the Bellevue Housing area which offers temporary lodging. Call 1-800-NAVY-INN for reservations. Bonafide bachelors are housed in either Blanchard Barracks at BAFB in Washington DC, or Train Barracks at Fort Myer, Virginia.

Geographical bachelors (GB) are housed on a space available basis at Naval Air Facility barracks located at Andrews AFB in Maryland. A potential GB is authorized up to 30 days temporary quarters upon arrival at any of our bachelor facilities and may apply for permanent or space "A" GB status.

The Washington Metro area offers a wide range of military support facilities, education and entertainment opportunities.

See specific directions on how to get to the installation from the airport, bus/train station(s) and the interstate under Category "Installation: Must Know Items" in this manual.

HISTORY

The Washington Navy Yard is the oldest U.S. Navy shore facility. Founded in 1799 on land set aside by George Washington, the Navy Yard first served as a shipbuilding facility. During WWl the Yard housed manufacturing facilities which produced various guns used in the war. Presently, the Navy Yard is home to a variety of activities including the Headquarters, Naval District Washington (NDW). NDW functions as the military coordinator for most of the navy units in the Washington, Northern Virginia and Maryland areas. The Navy Yard has been designated a National Historical Landmark by the National Park Service and features the Navy Museum, the homeport for Navy History.
