Naval Base Coronado is the Birthplace of Naval Aviation and the largest aviation industrial complex on the west coast. Host to 23 Squadrons and 50 other Tenant Commands, Naval Base Coronado was commissioned Naval Air Station, North Island on November 8, 1917. On August 15, 1961, the station was granted official recognition as the "Birth place of Naval Aviation" by Resolution 108 of the House Armed Services committee. The Navy's first Aviator, Lt. Gene Ellyson, was trained her starting as early as 1911.
Naval Base Coronado operates two other airfields in the Southern California region. One is Naval Auxiliary Landing Facility (NALF) San Clemente Island, located 70 miles northwest of San Diego in the California Channel Islands. The other is Outlying Field (OLF) Imperial Beach, located 10 miles south of the base on the U.S. Mexican border. OLFIB is the largest training center for Navy Helicopter Aviation on the West Coast, conducting over 300,000 operations annually. Counting Naval Base Coronado, Imperial Beach and San Clemente Island, North Island administers over 45,572 acres in Southern California.
The Air Station resembles a small city in its operations. It has its own police and fire departments. It has large factories such as the Naval Aviation Depot, employing 3,800 civilians and it has its own parks, beaches, housing and recreation areas. Its airfield has over 300 aircraft and its harbor is homeport to two major aircraft carriers, USS Constellation (CV-64) and the John C. Stennis (CVN-74). The base is also home to the Navy's only two Deep Submergence Rescue Vehicles, Mystic (DSRV 1) and Avalon (DSRV 2), as well as two Deep Submergence Vehicles, Turtle (DSV 3) and Sea Cliff (DSV 4) which are used in a wide variety of scientific research and recovery operations. The DSRV and DSV motor vessel support ships, Laney Chouest and Dolores Chouest are also homeported here.
Besides being the third largest employer of civilians in San Diego, Naval Base Coronado is also headquarters for 4 major military flag staffs including: Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet,Commander Third Fleet and Commanders Carrier Group One and Seven. With all the ships in port, the population of the base swells to over 30,000 military and civilian personnel.

HISTORY
In June of 1943, the Secretary of the Navy authorized the establishment of the Amphibious Training Base in the San Diego area to meet wartimes demands for trained landing craft crews. These crews were deployed to the South Pacific area of operations, where their successful and historical efforts were contributory to the conclusion of World War II. The streets of the base bear the names of those famous battles which led to the defeat of the Japanese Empire: Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Tulagi, and Bougainville, to name a few.
In 1946, the base was renamed Naval Amphibious Base (NAB) Coronado and its primary mission was changed to that of providing major administrative and logistical support to the amphibious units which are located on the base. The base also conducts research and tests of newly developed amphibious equipment.
The property itself was formed by land-fill, dredged from the bottom of the San Diego Bay. Even today the water table is but a few feet below the surface. The base has remained in an active, operational status since its initial establishment. In 1952, a military construction program was begun to replace some of the World War II "temporary" buildings and, in 1989, a comprehensive master plan outlined the future development of the base.
Today, the Base is a major shore command supporting 27 tenant commands and units. The average on base count of all personnel, military and civilian, at any one time is 5000 permanent and 7000 students, reservists, and transients.
Located on the Silver Strand between San Diego Bay and the Pacific Ocean, Naval Base Coronado is the West Coast hub for naval amphibious operations, including training and special warfare. At present, 27 tenant commands include mainly amphibious organizations but other important commands such as Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet; Naval Special Warfare Command; and Commander, Expeditionary Warfare indicative of the increased emphasis in this area of operations.
In the aggregate, the mix of operational training, construction, repair, assault, and logistical support all play an integral role in our national defense strategy.
