Directions...................... : The Naval Station, San Diego is located at 32nd Street and Harbor Drive. When you arrive at Lindburgh International Airport, follow the USO signs posted throughout the airport. The USO office trailer is located across the street from Terminal 2 (across from Northwest Airlines). The USO is staffed 7 days/week 0900-2300 and 24 hrs on the first eve of a long holiday weekend. The USO provides a shuttle to all bases at a discounted price. Military personnel arriving after 2300 should go to the Shuttle Island and ask for the Cloud 9 Shuttle at the USO rate. Taxi rates from the airport to the base vary between $14 and $18; it is important that you negotiate the rate for the total cost before you get into the taxi. IF YOU ARRIVE BY AUTO: From Interstate 8 (I-8) or Highway 163, proceed to Interstate 5 (I-5) South to 28th Street. At the top of the off-ramp, (28th Street), go to your right. At the first (Main Street) or the second traffic light, (Harbor Drive) make a left hand turn. Go to 32nd Street, make a right hand turn and proceed to the Main Gate (6) of Naval Station. IF YOU ARE TAKING A LOCAL BUS: Bus routes, fare and schedule information may be obtained by calling 233-3004. The San Diego Trolley also serves the Naval Station.

History......................... : The U. S. Government was deeded 77.2 acres of land by the city of San Diego on September 1, 1919. U. S. Destroyer Base San Diego officially opened in 1922 marking the birth of this station. From 1922 to 1943 the primary mission of the base was upkeep and preservation of decommissioned World War I destroyers. In 1943, the name was changed to U.S. Naval Repair Base, and the mission was altered to the repair and upkeep of modern U. S. Navy warships. Between 1943 and 1945 a total of 5,117 ships were serviced, repaired, and over- hauled at the repair base. In 1946, U. S. Naval Repair Base became Naval Station San Diego, with the primary mission of fleet logistic support.
